Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri), a leading engineering design firm, is seeing much of its business dovetail with the past decade's growth in the U.S. natural gas market. The Engineering News-Record promoted Burns & McDonnell to the top 15 on its list of 2015's top 250 international contractors. Industrial Info is tracking 140 projects with a total investment value (TIV) of $14.37 billion that involve Burns & McDonnell in some capacity; more than half of the TIV is attributed to the 10 highest-valued projects.

Almost all of the projects are to be found in the Power, Petroleum Refining, or Oil & Gas Terminals industries, and all but one Canadian project are located in the U.S.

Each of the top three projects involving Burns & McDonnell is valued at $1 billion, and two are located in Texas: Energy Future Holdings Corporation's (Dallas, Texas) Southern Cross transmission line in Rusk County, and Phillips 66 Company's (NYSE:PSX) (Houston, Texas) liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production and export terminal in Freeport . The Southern Cross project, which has received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) but has not had its routes finalized, will carry Texas' wind-generated energy via 400 miles of overhead, 500-kilovolt (kV), high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) line through a new converter switching station on the Texas/Louisiana border, across Louisiana, and to switchyards in Northeastern Mississippi. Burns & McDonnell currently is serving as consultant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Freeport facility, for which Burns & McDonnell is performing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, is nearing completion. The 4.4 million-barrel-per-month production and export terminal will help Phillips 66 meet growing international demand for U.S. butane and propane. The project is on time and on budget, with startup expected sometime in the second half of the year. Zachry Engineering Corporation (San Antonio, Texas) also is performing EPC services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The boom in U.S. natural gas production over the past decade has significantly boosted the country's role in the global energy trade, with liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers on the Gulf Coast now holding what soon will become one of its most important exports. Three other terminals on the Gulf Coast are in various phases of construction. For more information, see February 17, 2016, article--LNG, Chemicals and Power Drive Second-Quarter 2016 Project Starts in U.S. Southwest.

The third $1 billion project to involve Burns & McDonnell is Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated's (Silver Spring, Maryland) Fairview Energy Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The 980-megawatt (MW), natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) power station will feature two 337-MW General Electric (NYSE:GE), Siemens (NYSE:SI) or equivalent combustion turbine generators, with heat-recovery steam generators and a 306-MW steam turbine generator. Burns & McDonnell is performing engineering services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold a public hearing on an Air Quality Plan Approval Application for the plant in Jackson Township next week, including an open question-and-answer session.

Competitive Power Ventures also is bringing on Burns & McDonnell to perform engineering services at its $900 million Valley Energy Center in Middletown, New York. The 650-MW NGCC plant will use two 209-MW Siemens natural gas-fired combustion turbine generator sets, with CMI triple-pressure, reheat duct-fired heat-recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and a 214-MW Siemens steam turbine generator. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In addition to objections from environmental activists, the Valley Energy Center is likely to face delays due to an ongoing probe by the U.S. Attorney's Office. According to Times Herald-Record, authorities are trying to determine if a former aide to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had "undisclosed conflicts of interest" and participated in improper lobbying for the plant. The governor's office cut off all communication with Competitive Power Ventures last month to allow for the investigation, which effectively freezes any activity from the New York Power Authority, an agency that regulates the plant.

The six other highest-valued projects to involve Burns & McDonnell are:
  • $785 million: Northern Pass Transmission LLC's Border-To-Franklin Transmission Line in Franklin, New Hampshire
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $720 million: TransAlta Corporation's combined-cycle unit addition at Sundance Power Station in Duffield, Alberta
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $630 million: OGE Energy Corporation's natural gas unit addition at Mustang Power Station in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $600 million: NRG Energy Incorporated's Natural Gas Power Plant in Carlsbad, California
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $500 million: Energy Transfer Partners LP's NGL export terminal in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania
