Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With the fifth-largest economy in the world, California isn't lacking in industry or projects in development. Industrial Info is tracking more than $78 billion worth of projects under construction in the state. While the transportation sector leads the spending, the projects cover a wide range of sizes and sectors.

The transportation sector accounts for more than two-thirds of California's overall project spending, but it represents relatively few projects, as most carry high price tags and are aimed primarily at light rail and airports. Two of the largest underway involve the extension of the Purple Line on the Los Angeles subway system. Section 1 entails constructing 3.9 miles of track with twin-bored tunnels along with three new stations. Section 2 also is underway, involving 2.6 miles of new track and two new stations.

Section 1 has been underway since 2014, while construction on Section 2 began in early 2018. Both segments are expected to be completed next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports on Section 1 and Section 2.

California has some of the most rigorous fuel standards in the nation, and several projects involve the production of alternative fuels that can replace less clean fossil fuels. World Energy LLC (Boston, Massachusetts), for example, is adding a sustainable aviation fuel unit that will lift production at its plant in Paramount to 340 million gallons per year. In Bakersfield, Global Clean Energy Holdings Incorporated (Long Beach, California) is revamping a shuttered refinery formerly owned by Delek US to produce 150,000 barrels per day of renewable diesel. The plant will use Global Clean Energy's proprietary variety of camelina, rendered animal fats, soybean oil and other organic substances as feedstock. The project is nearing completion. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Alternative Fuels Project Database can learn more by viewing the reports on the World Energy and Global Clean Energy projects.

The Power Industry accounts for more than $6 billion of current spending in the state, mostly in the form of solar farms and battery energy-storage systems (BESS). Some projects incorporate both of these elements, notably AES Corporation's (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia) large undertaking in California City, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. AES' Bellefield plant is being constructed on an 8,300-acre site and will use BYD bifacial solar panels on a single-axis tracking system to produce 500 megawatts (MW). An accompanying 500-MW BESS can provide maximum energy for up to four hours in times when the sun isn't shining.

Construction on both elements of the project began in the summer of 2023 and are expected to be complete in the second half of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the reports on the solar farm and BESS portions of the project.

The City of San Francisco is underway with construction of a new biosolids digester and combined heat and power unit to help meet its green goals. The project is being constructed on a 47-acre site in the city, where existing buildings have been demolished, and new buildings totaling 200,000 square feet are being constructed that will facilitate the processing of 280,000 pounds per day of biosolids into 2 million cubic feet per day of biogas and 5 MW of renewable electricity. Construction kicked off in 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2026. Subscribers can click here for more information.

The Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry also plays a strong role in the state's construction activity, boasting more than $8.6 billion worth of active projects. Prominent life sciences real estate developer Alexandria Real Estate Trust Equities (NYSE:ARE) (Pasadena, California) is underway with a couple of projects in its home state, including a center for research and development in Millbrae, near San Francisco. After previous construction was demolished, work has begun on three life science buildings, an amenities building and an above-ground parking structure. Upon completion, which is expected in early 2026, the facility will house multiple tenants, including Eikon Therapeutics (Hayward, California), a biotech company that has leased 285,000 square feet of the 570,000 square feet of office and laboratory space. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Project Database can click here for more details on the project.
