Cambridge Major Laboratories to Dedicate $35 Million API Plant

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cambridge Major Laboratories (CML) (Germantown, Wisconsin) has completed construction of its new $35 million active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) plant adjacent to its existing site in Germantown. A formal dedication ceremony will be held July 30, 2009, at 11:00 am at the new plant site on Grant Drive. The company's original site in Germantown houses the company headquarters, a product development center and small-volume manufacturing.

When operational, the 125,000-square-foot facility will offer both cGMP intermediates and API production, with clinical and commercial capacity ranging from hundreds of kilograms to metric tons of product. Designed by the Zimmerman Design Group (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), the plant features four API production suites (through 2,000 gallons), as well as specialized cryogenic and hydrogenation suites.

As demand dictates, there is space available to add additional production suites (up to 4,000 gallon scale). The building's HVAC system is controlled by a Building Automation System, which monitors the temperature, pressures, and humidity of the processing areas. Each processing area is supplied with separate air-handling units with once-through air to prevent cross contamination.

Construction of the new plant began last year. The plant was built by Skyline Development (Milwaukee) (source: Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical Tracker). Wisconsin Governor James Doyle and other political and industry officials are expected to join CBL's President and CEO, Michael W. Major, at the dedication ceremony next week.
