Canada Revs Up $1.7 Billion in Power Industry Projects for Fourth-Quarter Kickoffs

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As a tumultuous election nears, Canada's Power Industry is playing a central role, with voters weighing a variety of proposals on everything from renewable-energy mandates to pipeline policies. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.7 billion worth of projects in Canada's Power Industry that are set to begin construction in the fourth quarter, more than two-thirds of which is attributed to wind-energy projects.

Nearly 90% of the fourth quarter's Power Industry investment is attributed to Alberta, which is consistently ranked as a powerhouse in the global Oil & Gas Industry. Although the province's newly elected United Conservative Party has cancelled previously enacted subsidies for renewable energy, wind and solar projects remain a viable industrial force. Conservatives are expected to continue paring regulations that penalize firms for carbon emissions that exceed certain levels, but renewable energy advocates do not expect any devastating blows, according to Engineering News-Record.

Suncor Energy Incorporated (NYSE:SU) (Calgary, Alberta) is among the Canadian oil and gas companies required under existing regulations to offset heavy carbon emissions with cleaner energy. It is at work on one of the highest-valued renewable projects in Western Canada: the Forty Mile Windfarm in Bow Island, Alberta. The estimated $350 million first phase and $160 million second phase each will involve the construction of 48 turbines to generate about 200 megawatts (MW).

The Bow Island project also includes a two-mile transmission line that will be serviced by the Maleb 530S and Granlea 1024S substations. The first phase and the transmission-related projects are set to wrap up by the end of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the first phase, second phase, transmission line, Maleb substation and Granlea substation.

Alberta also is home to several solar-energy endeavors, including Solar Krafte Utilities Incorporated's (Calgary) estimated $65 million first phase of a solar farm in Wrentham. The 23.4-MW project, which is part of a broader 41.4-MW plan, will utilize photovoltaic (PV) panels. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Quebec's plans for renewable energy also lean heavily on wind. Valeco Energie Quebec, a subsidiary of EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG (Karlsruhe, Germany), is proposing the estimated $20 million Dune-du-Nord Windfarm on Quebec's Magdalen Islands. The facility, which would be serviced by a $10 million collector substation, would use a pair of turbines to generate about 6.4 MW for the local grid. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the windfarm and substation.

Elsewhere in Canada, Sea Breeze Power Corporation (Vancouver, British Columbia) is readying construction on its $28 million Pothole Windfarm in Merritt, British Columbia, which is expected to generate 15 megawatts from seven turbines, and PEI Energy Corporation (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) is preparing to build the $10 million Kings County Substation in Souris, Prince Edward Island, which is designed to connect the island's grid with a proposed windfarm. A one-mile, $1.5 million transmission line will connect the substation to a separate power line. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Pothole Windfarm, Kings County Substation and power line.
