Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Canada's hard turn toward renewable-energy technology is evident in the second-quarter project kickoffs planned across its Industrial Manufacturing Industry. Greener priorities in the automotive, power-generation and household goods markets are informing the high-value capital investments that are almost entirely located within 100 miles of the U.S. border. Industrial Info is tracking more than US$3.2 billion worth of projects in Canada's Industrial Manufacturing Industry that are set to begin construction in the second quarter, with automotive-related projects accounting for more than 60% of the total.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) is preparing to begin work on one of its most ambitious projects in North America: the US$1.3 billion retooling of its assembly plant in Oakville, Ontario. The auto titan aims to replace its existing internal-combustion engine output at the facility in favor of battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) production. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project and Plant databases can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.
Earlier this month, Ford executives said the massive retooling project at Oakville will begin June 30 as planned, despite the company's recent decision to scale back its EV production amid softer-than-expected demand. Late last year, the automaker said it would delay the launch of the Oakville facility's new electric SUV from 2025 to 2027, to "allow for the consumer market for three-row EVs to further develop and enable Ford to take advantage of emerging battery technology," according to Reuters.
While the market for EVs has not developed as quickly as its proponents had anticipated, demand for the components necessary for EV batteries remains strong in the U.S. and Canada. The North American subsidiary of Amino Corporation (Shizuoka, Japan) is planning a US$25 million expansion of its auto parts assembly plant in Saint Thomas, Ontario, which includes the installation of a line to manufacture EV battery cases. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
Other parts suppliers preparing for additional capacity include Dana Incorporated (NYSE:DAN) (Maumee, Ohio), which is boosting production at two of its facilities in the same area: a US$44.46 million expansion of its heat exchanger-manufacturing plant in Cambridge, Ontario, and a US$15.54 million expansion of its propulsion system-manufacturing plant in Oakville. Both products are components of advanced thermal management systems, which are "critical for cooling sensitive electronics and batteries in modern EVs," according to the company. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Cambridge and Oakville projects.
Demand for lithium-ion battery technology remains strong in other industries, including those for everyday household and health-care items. E-One Moli Energy Corporation (Taipei, Taiwan) is preparing to begin construction on a US$1 billion battery-manufacturing facility in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, at the Maple Meadows Industrial Business Park, to cater to the markets for vacuums, medical devices and power and gardening tools. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
The University of Saskatchewan (USASK) is among the many Canadian institutions aiming to reduce its carbon footprint. Administrators are preparing for a US$87 million upgrade to electricity services at the Saskatoon campus, including overhauls to transformers, controls and other equipment. The effort is expected to last roughly two and a half years. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
