Celanese to Build Two New Factories in Nanjing

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Ticona, a business unit of Celanese Corporation (NYSE:CE) (Dallas, Texas), has started construction on two factories producing ultra high molecular weight polyethylene and long fiber reinforced thermoplastic production in Nanjing, capital of southern Jiangsu province in China.

Celanese has invested $148 million in another petrochemical factory in Nanjing's Petrochemical Park last September to produce 600,000 tons of acetic acid a year, which is raw material for the two newly factories.

According to David N. Weidman, Chairman and CEO of Celanese, the two factories will be put into operation in 2008 and will form a complete chain for the acetic acid industry.

With the two new factories, Celanese's global capacity of producing ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, which is currently produced mainly in Bishop, Texas and Oberhausen, Germany, will amount to 90,000 tons a year.

Celanese's global capacity of producing long fiber reinforced thermoplastic, which is currently produced mainly in Winona, Minnesota and Kelsterbach, Germany, will also increase to 35,000 tons a year.

Lyndon Cole, Executive Vice President and President of Ticona, said they will build more facilities of production and technology and thus enhance the company's place of top-notch provider of thermoplastic products. Celanese has moved its intermediate department to China's Shanghai this month, and formed its China investment company to enhance Celanese's performance in Asia, especially in China.

Celanese entered China in 1983 and has set up several acetic acid fibers in Nantong (Southern Jiangsu province), in cooperation with Tobacco Monopoly Administration of Southern Jiangsu province, and latterly in Kunming (Southwestern Yunnan province) and Zhuhai (Southern Guangdong province) with State Tobacco Monopoly Administration of China.

Nanjing Chemical Industrial Park is located in Nanjing, the capital city of Southern Jiangsu province, with total area of 45 square kilometers. In the Park, 26 square kilometers are used for oil processing, natural gas processing, organic chemistry and the fine chemical industry, while the other part is used for petrochemicals and logistics. The Industrial Park, along with its partners and neighbors (such as Jinling Chemical, Yangtze Chemical and Nanjing Chemical) in the province, form a chemical industrial zone along the Yangtze River with total area of 100 square kilometers.
