Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking approximately 68% less plant closures in the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) in 2011 than occurred in 2010. In 2011, IIR has tracked 13 chemical plant closures to date, representing about 900 jobs that were lost or transferred. There are four additional plants that are scheduled to close during the remainder of the year, affecting about 230 jobs.
In 2010, IIR tracked 53 chemical plant closures, representing more than 2,100 jobs. The Northeast region was hardest hit with 11 plant closures. BASF SE (PINK:BASFY) (Ludwigshafen, Germany) closed its paints plant in Belvidere, New Jersey, during the fourth quarter of 2010.
2011 has so far been a slow year for chemical plant closures, which is hopefully a sign that the industry is strengthening and adjusting to the current economy. IIR is currently tracking only five CPI plant closures planned for 2012. The largest plant set to close in 2012 is the high purity chemicals plant in Carteret, New Jersey, owned by ICL Performance Products LP (St. Louis, Missouri), which is a subsidiary of Israel Chemicals Limited Group (Tel-Aviv, Israel).
