Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Colbun SA (Santiago, Chile) confirmed that Puerto Coronel coal-fired power station is scheduled to go online during the first quarter of this year.

The project, which is situated in Chile's region VIII, entails the construction of a 342-megawatt (MW) coal-fired facility equipped with a GE RH-D5 steam turbine generator set, attached to a SES Tlmace AS dry-bottom boiler. The company postponed the first startup date, which was the first quarter of 2010, because of the damage that the plant suffered in the unprecedented magnitude 8.8 earthquake in February 2010, one of the strongest ever recorded in Chile. After that, and motivated by some irregularities affecting the turnkey contractor, the company was forced to set a new startup date for March of this year.

There are 12 coal-fired power projects in Chile currently under development. The projects have a total investment value of $7 billion, four of which are in the engineering phase, five in the planning phase, and the remainder under construction. Some of the largest plants include the 740-MW Punta Alcalde coal-fired power station, the 152-MW Guacolda coal-fired unit addition, and the 750-MW Mejillones coal-fired unit addition.
