China Power Investment to Build 4x400-Megawatt IGCC Project in Jiangsu

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China Power Investment Corporation (CPIC) (Beijing), one of the top five power producers in China, recently signed a cooperation agreement with the municipal government of Yancheng to invest $1.9 billion for a 4x400-megawatt (MW) integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) project in the Binhai Port Area of Yancheng City in East China's Jiangsu province. This is another strategic deployment of CPIC in the Binhai Port Area following an agreement to construct the 50 million-metric-ton coal storage and distribution center project, as well as the $1.17 billion offshore wind power project in the Binhai Port Area on June 23.

Binhai Port Area, which is located in the northeast coast of Jiangsu province, enjoys excellent deep-water coastline and possesses broad inland support, is the idea location for the construction of a port for 100,000 tonnage or more.

In line with the national strategy, CPIC believes that the Binhai Port Area is the best site to implement its strategy to boost transportation of coal from the north to the south, and to achieve its objective in business expansion. Through extensive investigation, CPIC decided to invest $1.46 billion for the 50 million-metric-ton coal storage and distribution center project, which mainly comprised of the construction of a 100,000-tonnage navigation channel project, a 100,000-tonnage port and a coal storage field with annual turnover of 50 million metric tons. On July 21, CPIC Binhai Port Company Limited (Yancheng, Jiangsu), the newly established project company of CPIC, signed the construction and supervision contracts with the contractor and supervisor. According to the schedule, the dyke for the 100,000-tonnage navigation channel will be built by the end of 2010, while two 100,000-tonnage universal berths, two 100,000-tonnage coal berths and the associated railway will be built by the end of 2012.

The newly signed IGCC project will achieve combined supply of electricity, heat, liquefied fuel, urban gas and chemical products based on its coal storage and distribution center in Binhai Port, and the required coal will be conveyed from the coal storage and distribution center via belt.
