China's New On-Grid Photovoltaic Power Doubles in First-Half 2014

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China added 3.3 gigawatts (GW) of solar photovoltaic power to its grid in the first half of the year, a jump of nearly 100% in newly added solar power from the first half of 2013, the country's National Energy Administration (NEA) reported last week.

Industrial Info is tracking more than 4,400 active power projects and 2,000 operational power plants in China, including 563 active solar power projects with total investment of $65 billion, and 198 operational solar power plants. Industrial Info reported 50 solar power projects with total investment of $5 billion completed in the first half of 2014, and the kick-off of 68 solar power projects with a total investment of $5 billion.

China's installed solar power capacity on the grid totaled 18.14 GW at the end of June, an increase of 271.8% over the same time last year. Meanwhile, China's new on-grid electricity that was derived from wind power totaled about 11 billion kilowatt-hours in the first half of 2014, a jump of more than 200% from the first half of 2013.

Gansu, Xinjiang and Qinghai, all in western China, ranked as the top three regions in solar photovoltaic power. Gansu posted 4.45 GW in solar power, while Xinjiang had 3.67 GW and Qinghai had 3.65 GW. In eastern and southern China, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Guangdong were the top three in solar photovoltaic power. Zhegiang had 700 megawatts (MW) in solar power, including 170 MW in new capacity; Jiansu had 530 MW, including 270 MW in newly added capacity; and Guangdong had 420 MW.

Despite the rapid development of solar power in the first half 2014, the progress is far behind the nation's target. According to the NEA, China plans to add 14 GW of photovoltaic power in 2014.
