Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction of the 280-megawatt (MW) Western Plains Wind project in Kansas just got under way. The project is owned by Infinity Wind Power in collaboration with Westar Energy (NYSE:WR) (Topeka, Kansas). M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) will act as the general contractor.

Construction on the project started last month and will utilize 122 Siemens wind turbines. It will generate enough energy to power approximately 200,000 homes. The windfarm will stimulate economic development in Ford County through land lease royalties paid to local landowners and payments to local and county government.

This project has a total investment of $435 million and is scheduled to be completed in May 2017. The project will employ over 200 craft workers at the peak of construction and provide 30 permanent jobs for the area.
