Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, but with offices throughout North America and one in South America, Walbridge is a leading construction contractor, with strong ties to the automotive industry. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $7.5 billion worth of U.S. projects involving Walbridge.
While Walbridge's Detroit headquarters gives it a leg up in the U.S. automobile industry's traditional home, today, most of the company's active automotive projects are outside of Michigan. Examples include Ford Motor Company's (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) Blue Oval City project in Stanton, Tennessee. The $5 billion+ project has two components: a manufacturing plant for the lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and an electric truck-manufacturing plant. Walbridge is acting as general contractor on the project.
The battery plant will produce 43 gigawatt-hours per year of batteries that will be used to supply Ford's all-electric lineup of F-Series vehicles, which will be manufactured at a new 4 million-square-foot assembly plant at the same site. Construction on the plants kicked off early last year and is expected to be completed in mid-2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for the report on the battery-manufacturing plant and click here for the report on the truck-assembly plant.
Also for Ford, Walbridge is at work on the $700 million expansion and retooling of a truck-assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky. The project entails retooling and modernizing the plant to increase production capacity, including for Ford's F-Series Super Duty pickup. In addition, a new chiller plant and electrical building will be constructed. The project is expected to be completed in the second half of next year. Subscribers can click here for more details.
In regard to larger vehicles, Walbridge is wrapping up the expansion of Nikola Motor Company LLC's (Phoenix, Arizona) hydrogen and electric semi-truck assembly plant in Coolidge, Arizona. The project entails adding a 500,000-square-foot building expansion with production lines and supporting equipment to allow Nikola to produce 35,000 vehicles per year. In Asheville, North Carolina, Walbridge is underway with Pratt & Whitney's (East Hartford, Connecticut) project for a grassroot casting foundry and manufacturing plant. The project includes construction of a 1.2 million-square-foot facility, of which 850,000 square feet will be manufacturing space to house an advanced casting foundry for the production of turbine airfoils. Construction kicked off in 2021 and is expected to be completed this summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for the report.
In San Antonio, Texas, Walbridge is wrapping up Phase I construction of a grassroot data center for Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) and preparing to launch Phase II. Phase I involves the construction of two data center buildings, while Phase II will add another 46,000-square-foot data center building, expected to be completed later this year. Phase II potentially could be followed by a third phase of construction, still in the early planning stage, which entails constructing another 60,000-square-foot building to further expand Microsoft's cloud services in the region. Outside of the Industrial Manufacturing sector, Walbridge recently began work on a brownfield laboratory and vivarium for Northern Biomedical Research Incorporated (Norton Shores, Michigan) in Muskegon, Michigan. The project entails renovating an existing 125,000-square-foot building to include new lab space and a vivarium for the research and testing of animal care therapeutics. Walbridge is providing design-build services for the project, which is expected to be completed in late 2024.
