Continental Motors Readies for Aircraft Engine Plant in Alabama

Aviation Industry Corporation is aiming to boost its U.S. presence by accelerating its testing and development of new products.

Continental plans to begin construction on a $70 million aircraft engine-manufacturing plant in Mobile, Alabama, this fall. The new building will serve as Continental's corporate headquarters and house manufacturing, customer and technical services. It will offer customers worldwide updates through phone, email and mobile-app support in a continuous, 24-hour service.

Construction management firm Hoar Program Management LLC (Birmingham, Alabama) is currently in design phase for the state-of-the-art, 225,000-square-foot building, which will be located on Michigan Avenue in the Brookley Aeroplex. Many of the 11 antiquated buildings in the complex were built in the 1940s and are slated to be demolished.

About $30 million will be spent on site development and about $40 million on new manufacturing equipment, including 3D additive equipment, which will accelerate production and increase product quality. Advanced robotics and conveying equipment also will be installed to increase production.

The company hopes to complete this project and see it fully operational in the spring of 2019.
