CoolPlanet Energy Attracting Elite Investors to Cellulosic-Based Start-Up

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Second-generation biofuels start-up CoolPlanet Energy Systems (Camarillo, California) is proceeding with fabrication of its demonstration-scale modular plant in Camarillo. The modules are set up shipping containers in an open-air plant layout, and each module will have the capacity to produce 2 million gallons per year of biofuels from raw biomass, such as woodchips, crop residue (such as corn cobs), stalks and algae.

The company's plans are to install hundreds of relatively low-cost modular plants around the country in the next few years to make effective use of available biomass, without incurring high transportation costs. Each plant will produce 2 million to 10 million gallons per year of "N100" negative carbon fuel, which serves as an exact replacement for gasoline, and will operate in current vehicles. The plants can make even more advanced superfuels for even higher gas mileage and better performance in future vehicles.

Some of the elite investors include BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London, England), General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut), Google Ventures, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas), NRG Energy (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey) and North Bridge Venture Partners. The company completed its B Round financing in the spring of 2011 and has pulled in its C Round a year ahead of schedule in order to accelerate the development of its modular fuel production plants.

The demonstration-scale plant is expected to be fully operational and begin showcasing the technology by March 2012. The company is currently beefing up staff to operate the plant.
