Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--If it has a big name in the tech sector, it's probably building in Iowa. Construction of data centers by companies such as Google parent Alphabet Incorporated (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California), Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) are all underway in Iowa. But that's not all that's happening in the state, which is seeing strong showings from the agricultural products sector as well as the warehouse and distribution sector.

Among the largest projects underway in the state is Alphabet's expansion of its data center in Council Bluffs, just across the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska. The project entails constructing three modular buildings totaling 450,000 square feet to expand space and data center operations. The project kicked off earlier this year and is expected to wrap up toward the end of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) can click here for more details on the project.

Nearing completion in West Des Moines are Microsoft Corporation's Ginger West and Ginger East projects, parts of a planned 1.8 million-square-foot data center campus. The Ginger West project, which kicked off in 2021, includes a 185,000-square-foot data center building, while Ginger East, which began construction last year, includes a 250,000-square-foot building to increase capacity for Microsoft's services. Contractors are expected to finish both projects in the near future. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on Ginger West and Ginger East.

In addition, Apple Incorporated (NASDAQ:AAPL) (Cupertino, California) is nearing completion on a grassroot data center in Waukee, on the western outskirts of Des Moines, and Meta is constructing two data center buildings at its Altoona campus , on the other side of Des Moines, bringing the campus' total size to 5 million square feet. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the Apple and Meta projects.

Another name in Big Tech, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), is expanding its Iowa presence with the construction of a grassroot fulfillment and distribution center in Davenport. General contractor Ryan Companies (Minneapolis, Minnesota) kicked off construction on the project in mid-2021 and is nearing completion on it. The five-story, 640,000-square-foot facility will use the latest in robotics technology to help pick and pack items to ship to customers. Subscribers can click here for more information.

Data centers and online shopping aside, Iowa is still very much an agricultural state, and its project activity demonstrates this. The Food & Beverage Industry accounts for more than $1.3 billion worth of projects presently under construction in the state. Among the largest of these is Platinum Crush LLC's (Alta, Iowa) grassroot soybean crush plant near Alta. The facility will be able to process 38.5 million bushels of soybeans annually, producing 847,000 tons of soybean meal, 450 million pounds of crude soybean oil and 77,000 tons of pelleted soybean hulls per year. Engineering, procurement and construction firm Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota) is expected to wrap up the project in mid-2025. Subscribers can click here for more details.

Cargill Incorporated (Wayzata, Minnesota) is adding to its 275,000-bushel-per-day corn milling and ethanol production complex in Eddyville by installing new bioprocessing and fermentation equipment, creating a research and development center, and improving the wastewater treatment system to increase production capacity. In addition, Cargill, through a joint venture, is constructing a 1,4-Butanediol (BDO) unit at the complex, which will use corn sugar feedstock to produce a new renewable BDO product, Qira. According to news media, Qira saves up to 93% of greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional BDO. The projects are expected to be completed next summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can view the reports on the expansion and BDO unit.
