Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While Iowa may call to mind images of farmland and windfarms, it's actually the data center sector that leads the state's construction activity, accounting for one-third of the value of the nearly $6.4 billion in projects Industrial Info is tracking in the state that are in the construction phase. Nevertheless, Iowa's roots in agriculture are apparent, with food and beverage projects accounting for more than $1.4 billion in spending.
When you think of the technology sector, one of the companies that are building data center facilities in Iowa perhaps springs to mind. These include Google parent Alphabet Incorporated (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington), Apple Incorporated (NASDAQ:AAPL) (Cupertino, California), and Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California).
Of these companies, Microsoft emerges as the leading spender in the state, largely because of its Ginger East and Ginger West projects in West Des Moines. Both projects kicked off last year. The Ginger East component includes construction of a 245,000-square-foot grassroot data center facility that is expected to go into operation in early 2025. The project at Ginger West is a Phase II expansion adding a 184,500-square-foot data center building that is expected to be completed this summer. A third Microsoft project in West Des Moines entails constructing a 250,000-square-foot data center addition at another location and is expected to be completed toward the end of this year.
Microsoft's facilities in West Des Moines include a supercomputer used for artificial intelligence tasks that the company considers "among the largest and most powerful in the world." Microsoft opened its first data center in West Des Moines in 2012. In Waukee, Iowa, on the western outskirts of Des Moines, Apple is nearing completion of the first phase of a planned $1.9 billion data center campus, which has been under construction since 2022. Phase I construction adds not only a 316,000-square-foot data center building, but also other facilities that will enable further growth, including a 63,000-square-foot office and administration building, a maintenance building, and a network distribution building. When it starts operations this summer, the facility will serve as a data management site for Apple services including Siri, FaceTime and iMessages. One of the biggest current projects in Iowa kicked off last year, when the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) began an expansion project of its munitions plant in Middletown. The project includes a building addition that will house a new assembly line to increase production of 155-millimeter high-explosive projectiles by 12,000 to 20,000 per month. An Associated Press article from about a year ago claimed at that time that the U.S. government had given 1.5 million 155-millimeter rounds to Ukraine, and that that country was firing 6,000 to 8,000 shells per day. The project is expected to be completed in 2027. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
Outside of industrial manufacturing projects such as these, the Food & Beverage Industry takes second position for the value of Iowa's under-construction projects. Cargill Incorporated (Wayzata, Minnesota) is adding to its 275,000-bushel-per-day corn milling and ethanol production complex in Eddyville by installing new bioprocessing and fermentation equipment, creating a research and development center, and improving the wastewater treatment system to increase production capacity. In addition, Cargill, through a joint venture, is constructing a 1,4-Butanediol (BDO) unit at the complex, which will use corn sugar feedstock to produce a new renewable BDO product, Qira. According to news media, Qira saves up to 93% of greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional BDO. The projects are expected to be completed soon. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can view the reports on the expansion and BDO unit.
On the livestock side of the food and beverage equation, Cattlemen's Heritage (Des Moines) earlier this year launched construction of a grassroot beef-processing plant in Mills County. When completed in 2026, the facility will begin ramping up toward its 2,000-head-per-day processing rate. The company hopes the plant will help fill what it sees as a beef-processing deficit in the Upper Midwest. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
