Despite Losses, Otter Tail Ag Continues to Operate Minnesota Fuel Ethanol Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Investor-owned Otter Tail Ag Enterprises LLC (Fergus Falls, Minnesota) continues to operate a fuel ethanol plant in Minnesota, despite losses and foreclosure proceedings initiated by lender AgStar Financial Services (Mankato, Minnesota).

Earlier this month, AgStar filed a complaint against Otter Tail Ag after the company failed to make monthly installments that had been due for the past several months. The plant continues to operate and the company is "fighting hard" to stay in operation, according to Chief Executive Officer Anthony Hicks.

The 55 million-gallon-per-year plant was built during ethanol's heyday in 2007, went into operation in early 2008 and utilizes Delta-T's (Williamsburg, Virginia) ethanol process technology.

Otter Tail is not the only ethanol plant in the area suffering from industry woes. Tharaldson Ethanol in Casselton, North Dakota, recently stopped grinding corn and is only selling the remaining ethanol they have in storage. The plant has a nameplate capacity of 120 million gallons per year.

Other plants in the area sitting idle are DENCO in Morris, Minnesota (124 million gallons per year); Guardian Energy in Janesville, Minnesota (110 million gallons per year) and North County Ethanol in Rosholt, South Dakota (20 million gallons per year).
