Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - Danish energy company Dong Energy's (Fredericia, Denmark) and German engineering firm Siemens Wind Energy (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) have inked one of the largest wind turbine deals in the world worth billions of euro.
Dong has announced plans to buy 154 offshore wind turbines rated at 6 megawatts (MW) with a combined generating capacity of 924 MW. The next generation SWT-6.0-154 6 MW turbines will be installed from 2015 at Dong's Gode windfarm project in the German North Sea. The turbines are based on Siemens' gearless direct drive technology and boast a 154-meter rotor. At 6MW they are almost twice as powerful as the offshore turbines in use today.
In February, the U.K. became home to the first real-world testing of the new 6 MW turbine when Siemens installed two of the massive turbines at Dong's Gunfleet Sands project, almost 9 kilometres (km) off the English coast in waters measuring 13 meters deep. For additional information, see February 5, 2013, article - U.K. Tests Largest Offshore Wind Turbines
"With these agreements we are stepping up our commitment to the German offshore wind market," commented Samuel Leupold, Executive Vice President at Dong Energy Wind Power. "We are already building our first wind farm in Germany and maturing a number of other projects, including the Gode Wind projects on which we plan to use the supplies under these agreements. By 2020 we want to have installed 6,500 MW of offshore wind power compared to the 1,700 MW we have already built".
Dong and Siemens have a long track record in the wind power sector and the current deal mirrors one signed in July last year when Dong committed to buying 300 of the 6 MW turbines from Siemens to be used on a number of offshore projects currently underway in the U.K. The deal was estimated to be worth approximately 2.5 billion ($3 billion) at the time and the turbines have a combined generating capacity of approximately 1,800 MW. They will be used at Dong projects including Lincs, London Array and West of Duddon Sands between 2014 and 2017.
