Dos Arbolitos Windfarm Seen as Major Contribution to Mexico's Renewable Energy Goals

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Iberdrola Renovables de Mexico S.A. de CV (Mexico, DF) plans to construct the 70-megawatt (MW), $140 million Dos Arbolitos Windfarm in the Mexican town of Juchitán de Zaragoza, in the state of Oaxaca.

Gamesa Energia S.A. de CV (Mexico, DF) has been chosen as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the proposed project, which will consist of 35 Gamesa G80 wind turbine generator sets, each with a capacity of 2 MW. The windfarm will provide about 70 MW of clean, renewable energy, which will generate enough electricity for about 150,000 Mexican homes and avoid about 560,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The Dos Arbolitos Windfarm also will help to satisfy the growing electricity demand in the town of Juchitán de Zaragoza. Iberdrola seeks to meet Mexico's green energy goals by harnessing the strong winds in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the windiest places in the world.

The project supports Mexico's broader plans to develop renewable energy sources. Currently, about 75% of Mexico's 60 gigawatts (GW) of total installed electricity generation capacity come from fossil fuels.

Iberdrola is the leading independent producer in Mexico, and it will continue to be a key player in the expansion of the electric power grid. The Dos Arbolitos Windfarm will be a significant benefit to Oaxaca, because it will improve the local infrastructure with the construction of roads and the addition of jobs. More than 100 jobs will be generated during the site-preparation and construction phase. About 30 permanent positions will be created for operation and maintenance services.

Windfarm energy technology is a reliable, competitive and clean source of energy that will improve the economic growth of the region and bring significant opportunities to Oaxaca. Construction is slated to begin toward the end of 2013. The windfarm will begin full operations at the end of 2014, if all goes well.
