Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Progress Energy Carolinas Incorporated, one of the primary operations of Progress Energy Incorporated (NYSE:PGN)(Raleigh, North Carolina), is performing equipment studies for a dry cask storage system to be built at the Brunswick Nuclear Power Station. Construction is to start by June 2005, with project completion in 2008.

The nuclear facility is situated on a 1,200-acre site, west of the Cape Fear River, in Southport, Brunswick County, North Carolina. The plant consists of two 895-megawatt General Electric boiling-water-reactors (BWRs), with General Electric turbine generator sets. Unit #1 became operational in 1977, with license expiration in 2016; Unit #2 came online in 1975 and is licensed until 2014.

Owners and operators of nuclear power plants commonly turn to dry cask storage systems as a means of expanding the storage capacity at the plants. With the dry cask storage, fuel is removed from the spent fuel pool, after a cooling period of at least one year, placed inside stainless steel casks that are then sealed, filled with an inert gas and placed inside vaults made of steel, concrete, or other materials.

Transnuclear Incorporated (Hawthorne, New York) will be providing the NUHOMS-61BT storage canisters, and subcontracting out fabrication, as well as transportation services. The company supplies engineering products and services for the storage and transport of radioactive materials. Transnuclear is also contracted to perform the same scope of work at Progress Energy’s three other nuclear plants: The H B Robinson Nuclear Power Station (Huntsville, South Carolina), the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Station (New Hill, North Carolina), and the Crystal River #3 Nuclear Power Station (Crystal River, Florida). The company supplies engineering products and services for the storage and transport of radioactive materials.

Progress Energy, formed by the merger of Carolina Power & Light and Florida Power, also owns and operates: the H B Robinson Nuclear Power Station (Huntsville, South Carolina), the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Station (New Hill, North Carolina), and the Crystal River #3 Nuclear Power Station (Crystal River, Florida).
