Dupont Progresses with Construction of New Plant in Delaware

After several permitting delays, E I Du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD)(DuPont) (Wilmington, Delaware) began construction in August 2004 for its new sulfuric acid regeneration plant neighboring the Premcor Refining Group Incorporated (Old Greenwich, Connecticut) petroleum refinery in Delaware City, Delaware. This new plant called Red Lion, will have a design capacity of 550 tons per day and will replace two previously idled units at the Premcor site.

Mechanical completion of the plant is planned for Summer 2005 and commercial operation scheduled to begin in August. Monsanto Enviro-Chem Systems, Incorporated (Saint Louis, Missouri) provided design, engineering, and procurement services, while their sister company, Leonard Construction (Saint Louis, Missouri) acted as the prime construction contractor.

The spent sulfuric acid processed here will ultimately be sent back to Premcor for use in its production of alkylate, an octane enhancer used in gasoline.
