Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) is tracking nearly $9 billion in projects involving contractor and design-build firm Skanska AB (Stockholm, Sweden), including more than $6.2 billion in the U.S. The company's projects cover a range of industries, from Industrial Manufacturing to Power and Pharmaceutical-Biotech projects.
Among the largest projects in the U.S. involving Skanska are some transportation-based projects in California. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Los Angeles, California) is extending the Purple Line of the area's light rail system in three sections. Construction on Section 1 began in 2014 and includes 3.9 miles of track with twin-bored tunnels, as well as three new stations. Skanska is performing design-build work on the $1.25 billion project, which is expected to be completed in mid-2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In San Francisco, California, the San Francisco International Airport is expanding an automated people mover and two new AirTrain stations to reduce travel time and reduce terminal congestion. Skanska is performing design-build work on the project, which began in late 2017 and is expected to take about two years to complete. The people mover system will be upgraded by constructing an approximately 1,900-foot extension of an elevated concrete guideway, and two new AirTrain stations will be built. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $207 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. Also at the airport, Skanska is underway upgrades and modernizations to a boarding area and baggage handling system.
While Power Industry projects aren't at the top of Skanska's list of projects in terms of overall project value, the company is general contractor on a major power project in Sandwich, Massachusetts. NRG Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NRG) (Houston, Texas) is underway with construction with a brownfield combustion turbine unit addition at its Canal Generating Plant. Construction on the 330-megawatt project began early last year and is expected to be completed this summer. The $320 million project is in its final commissioning phase. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Skanska also is involved in several Pharmaceutical-Biotech projects. Among these is Western Carolina University's addition of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) facility at its campus in Cullowhee, North Carolina. The project, which began in the summer of 2018, involves demolishing the existing natural sciences building and constructing a new, 185,000-square-foot facility and equipment for the research and instruction of life sciences, including chemistry, biology and microbiology; engineering; and other disciplines. The project, which has an estimated TIV of $121 million, is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Washington, Seattle University (Seattle, Washington) is in the final engineering stage for construction of an addition at its Center for Science and Innovation. The project includes a five-story, 110,000-square-foot building including laboratory space to house the university's STEM-related instruction. Construction is expected to begin later this year, for completion in the summer of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
With its home base in Sweden, Skanska also has some large projects in Scandinavia, including the expansion of a chromite mine in Finland. Skanska is providing engineering, procurement and construction on the project, which entails expanding the 1.3 million-ton-per-year mine near Kemi by an additional 500 meters in depth to a total of 1,000 meters. Construction on the $281 million project began last year and is expected to be completed in late 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
