Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last week, more than 20 interested companies gathered the Gulf of El-Ziet area to present documentation for a chance to win a contract for a 200-megawatt (MW) windfarm project in Egypt. The project is financed by the Egyptian government, with cooperation from the European Investment Bank, the European Commission, and the German Bank of Reconstruction and Development, as these organizations will provide $380 million in loans and grants to fund the project.
The project area, which is near the Gulf of Suez on the Red Sea coast, has high average wind speeds of 11.5 meters per second, at 24 meters above ground level.
The project tender will be outlined in three separate lots. The first will be for the wind-turbine supply (except for turbines with capacity lower than 850 kilowatts), foundation and SCADA system (supply, erection and commissioning); the second will be for the electrical and mechanical work; and the third will be for the civil work.
Goldwind (Urumqi, Xinjiang) and M-torres will be among the first-time bidders competing for the contract. Goldwind is a Chinese wind turbine manufacturer. The company is the largest turbine manufacturer in China and one of the 10 largest in the world. "Currently, we are studying the suitability of our wind turbines for the site, and if we have positive results we will be in the race," said Li Fan, the international manager for Goldwind.
M-torres and Elsewedy for Wind Energy Generation plan to assemble wind turbines in Egypt, with the same standards as the M-torres facility in Spain, and manufacture the towers and blades through the M-torres production facility in Egypt.
