Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) recently approved the construction of Enbridge Incorporated's (NYSE:ENB) (Calgary, Alberta) Ridgeline Expansion Project, which features a proposed natural gas pipeline and compressor station designed to power Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) switch from coal to natural gas at a plant in Tennessee.
The Ridgeline project will closely follow the route of an existing pipeline to minimize environmental impact, and its components include:
"The project will not have adverse impacts on existing shippers or other pipelines and their existing customers and will have minimal economic impacts on the interests of landowners and surrounding communities," FERC wrote in its April 2 order.

Enbridge's latest corporate update in March noted the company plans to spend up to $2 billion worth of mainline capital investment through 2028. As designed, the Ridgeline Expansion Project would transport up to 400 MMSCFD of natural gas to the Tennessee Valley Authority's gas-fired plant in Kingston, Tennessee that is expected to replace an existing nine-unit, coal-fired power plant. Site preparation for the plant is underway and construction is expected to include two 435-MW gas turbines with two heat-recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and a 580-MW steam turbine, resulting in 1,450 MW of generation. TVA expects to retire the coal-fired units by the end of 2027. Subscribers to the GMI Power Project Database can click here to read the detailed project report.
Late last month, TVA said it would release requests for proposals for up to 2,250 MW of new utility-scale natural gas, battery, solar-plus-battery and solar generation that must be in commercial operation by 2031. "To prepare for the future, TVA is making significant investments in its power system toward new generation and transmission," the company said. "Pending required approvals and completion of applicable legal reviews and processes, TVA's current planning assumption includes building about 5,500 megawatts of new firm, dispatchable generation by 2029."
TVA added that "construction will begin soon" at what it calls the New Caledonia Generation Site, on vacant land in Lowndes County, Mississippi, which would provide approximately 500 MW of new generation capacity by utilizing six dual-fuel combustion turbines. The Ridgeline project will closely follow the route of an existing pipeline to minimize environmental impact, and its components include:
- an approximately 117-mile, 30-inch-diameter mainline pipeline and an approximately five-mile, 30-inch header pipeline that would deliver up to 400 million cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of natural gas across seven counties in Tennessee;
- an approximately 8-mile, 30-inch-diameter lateral pipeline in Morgan and Roane counties;
- construction of a natural gas compressor station in Hartsville (Trousdale County) with two electric-motor driven gas packages; and
- an 8-megawatt (MW) solar array to partially power the Hartsville compressor station and supply power back to the electric grid
"The project will not have adverse impacts on existing shippers or other pipelines and their existing customers and will have minimal economic impacts on the interests of landowners and surrounding communities," FERC wrote in its April 2 order.
