Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pipeline and energy company Enbridge Incorporated (NYSE:ENB) (Calgary, Alberta) said Wednesday it has entered a 50:50 joint venture with EDF Renewables to "participate in the construction and operation" of an Ohio solar project. EDF Renewables is a subsidiary of Electricite de France (EDF) (Paris, France).
The $695 million Fox Squirrel solar project in Madison County, Ohio, which is being developed by EDF, is being constructed in three phases, according to Enbridge's November 15 press release. It is expected to deliver up to 577 megawatts (MW) of solar power to the utility grid by the end of 2024. Enbridge will invest US$149 million in the first phase, which is expected to be operational by year-end, and plans to reach a final investment decision (FID) for the following phases throughout 2024, assuming certain conditions are met. When complete, Fox Squirrel would become Ohio's largest solar complex. Enbridge has committed more than C$8 billion (US$5.8 billion) in capital investment for renewable energy and power transmission projects currently in operation or under construction since 2022, according to the company website. In addition, its renewable energy projects either operating or under construction have a gross generation of 5,154 MW and 2,296 MW of net generation. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, net generation is the amount of gross electricity generation produced minus the electricity used to operate a power plant.
In the press release, Enbridge Executive Vice President Corporate Strategy and President, Power Mathew Arkman said, "This partnership expands Enbridge's strategic relationship with EDF Renewables while driving accretive renewables growth in North America," adding the project "will be complementary to both our growth outlook and energy transition leadership."
The two companies are nearing completion on France's first offshore windfarm. For more information, see November 10, 2023, article - France's First Floating Windfarm Nears Completion.
In terms of EDF's renewable project activity in the U.S., the company earlier this month held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its Arrow Canyon solar-plus-storage project in Clark County, Nevada, which features 200 MW of solar power and a 75-MW, five-hour-duration battery energy storage system (BESS). The project began construction in late 2021, with the solar portion completed in December 2022 and the storage portion in November 2023. Click here for the related project reports.
EDF and engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) company Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) are at work on the US$200 million Morris Ridge solar plant in Livingston County, New York. The project, expected to wrap up in late 2024, is designed to utilize photovoltaic panels from Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) for 177 MW of solar generation. Among the EDF projects in development are the 385-MW, proposed US$685 million Sandow Lakes Ranch Solar Facility near Rockdale, Texas, about 40 miles west of College Station, and the proposed US$378 million Livingston Windfarm near Pontiac, Illinois, which would utilize 85 3-MW wind turbines for 255 MW of wind generation. The projects are in their early planning stages, and many factors could delay or alter the projected timelines. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Sandow Lakes and Livingston projects.
