Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enel Green Power (EGP) (LSE:ONVEL.L) (Rome, Italy) has started the construction of three solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in South Africa. The power generated from the plants will be sold to national power utility Eskom under a supply agreement awarded in the third phase of the country's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP).
The 82.5-megawatt (MW) Aurora PV plant is sited in the Northern Cape province and will have the capacity to generate 168 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually. This has the potential to power 53,000 South African households.
The Paleisheuwel PV plant will have an installed capacity of 82.5 MW and will be located in the Western Cape province. It will have the capacity to provide enough power for 48,000 homes.
The Tom Burke PV plant will be sited in Limpopo province will have an installed capacity to generate 122 GWh, equivalent to the power needs of 38,000 households.
In addition to three plants under construction, EGP was awarded the right to build the 82.5-MW Pulida PV park, the 111-MW Gibson Bay windfarm and the 88-MW Cookhouse/Nojoli windfarm. These projects match with EGP's growth target for 2014-18.
