Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) (Rome), a global energy major and Italy's largest energy provider, has launched a renewable energy division called Enel Green Power. Enel's existing green energy portfolio will be a part of the newly formed business unit. Enel Green Power will focus on expanding Enel's renewable energy business and generating power from clean sources of energy in Italy and abroad. The new company will take over Enel's existing operations in the wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric and biomass renewable energy sectors across Europe, North America and Central and South America.
Enel Green, with an installed capacity 4,300 megawatts (MW) and a generation output of over 17 billion kilowatt-hours, has the distinction of being the leading European company with a global renewable energy business. The power generated by the company from nonpolluting sources prevents 13 million metric tons of carbon-dioxide emissions yearly.
Enel Green's focus for the next five years is likely to be on enhancing its installed capacity from water, sun and natural heat. Enel has executed a number of projects in Europe, North America and Latin America. The company has 2,513 MW of installed capacity in Italy and about 374 MW in Spain in the wind, geothermal, hydroelectric and photovoltaic sectors. In North America, Enel produces 21 MW from biomass and the combined installed capacity in the region is about 573 MW. The total is marginally higher in Latin America with an installed capacity of 664 MW from wind and hydroelectric sources. Enel Green recently set up 100 MW of wind capacity in France and Greece and some projects are currently in progress in Romania and Bulgaria, as well.
Enel Green strives to be a major player in the solar cell market in Italy. It currently has a 35% market share in the country's total production of photovoltaic and solar thermal power. A facility that will be able to generate 50 MW of photovoltaic power is also being built by the company in Italy. The company is making investments in advanced technologies, such as generating power from solar energy and gas. One such example is the Archimedes project at Enel's Priolo Gargallo plant, which is currently under implementation. In this project, a thermal plant is being integrated with a solar plant to produce power.
Wind power has emerged as the fastest growing renewable sectors for the company; it offers a potential for 30% growth in the coming years. Enel Green is committed to expanding its business in wind power and other upcoming sectors such as geothermal and biomass.
