Researched by Industrial Indfor Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) is progressing with a natural gas-fired generation buildout in an effort to replace legacy plants and lower the company's carbon footprint by 2020. The company also invested $1 billion in power transmission and distribution projects in 2017 and is progressing with major transmission programs that will be wrapped up this year.

Entergy is underway with construction or planning on three natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plants in Louisiana and Texas. The company is constructing its Saint Charles and Lake Charles plants in Louisiana and its Montgomery County project in Texas. In Entergy's recent conference call, Chief Executive Officer Leo Denault spoke of how the construction of the facilities will help the company maintain its environmental commitments. "In 2011, our Environment 2020 commitment included a voluntary pledge that through the year 2020, we would maintain our carbon dioxide emissions at 20% below year 2000 levels on a cumulative basis," said Denault. "I'm pleased to report that we are meeting our commitments, and the investments that we're making will enable us to continue to lower our emissions rates at the utility. For example, highly efficient combined-cycle power stations such as Saint Charles, Lake Charles and Montgomery County will produce fewer carbon emissions than the legacy units they replace, improve our average fleet efficiency and use less water."

Entergy's 980-megawatt (MW) Saint Charles combined-cycle addition near Montz, Louisiana, began construction in the summer of 2016, with Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (NYSE:CBI) (CB&I) (The Hague, Netherlands) performing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $1 billion and is expected to be wrapped up in the summer of 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Lake Charles combined-cycle plant near Westlake, Louisiana, is in the site preparation stage. The facility will have a generating capacity of 994 MW. Completion is expected in the summer of 2020. CB&I is providing EPC work on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $871 million. Beard Construction Group LLC (Port Allen, Louisiana) is a subcontractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Montgomery County project near Willis, Texas, is in the engineering stage. The plant will have a generating capacity of 993 MW. Construction is expected to start early next year and be completed in late 2021. CB&I also is providing EPC work. The project has an estimated TIV of $937 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Entergy also is building out its transmission infrastructure. Denault said, "Two major transmission projects we will complete this year are the Lake Charles Project and the $130 million Southwest Mississippi Improvement Project. We look forward to their completion and to the benefits that they will provide to our customers and to our region." Industrial Info is tracking several transmission projects that make up these projects. For examples, see Industrial Info's project reports on the transmission line and switching substation near Sulphur, Louisiana, which are expected to be wrapped up this quarter, and the 230-kilovolt transmission line near Natchez, Mississippi, which is expected to be completed this summer.

Entergy reported a fourth-quarter 2017 net loss of $479 million, compared with a net loss of $1.76 billion in fourth-quarter 2016. Full-year net income $412 million, compared with a net loss of $584 million in 2016.
