Entergy Signs PPA for Texas Solar Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In keeping with its goal of having net-zero emissions by 2050, U.S. power company Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for all of the output from a solar power plant being constructed in Texas by Longroad Energy (Boston, Massachusetts). Construction on Longroad's Umbriel solar farm near Livingston, Texas, for which the PPA was signed, began recently. The facility will use more than 453,000 thin-film photovoltaic modules manufactured by First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona). McCarthy Building Companies (St. Louis, Missouri) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services on the project, which is expected to be completed in 2024. The facility will generate 150 megawatts (MW) of energy that will go to Entergy. In 2020, Entergy announced its goals to have net-zero emissions by 2050. In subsequent years, the company established interim goals in its path towards net-zero, which include:

  • Having 50% of its power generation coming from carbon-free sources by 2050
  • Reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 50% from 2020 levels by 2030
  • Retiring all of its coal-fired generation plants by 2030
Entergy is pursuing these aims in different ways, including developing its own renewable energy projects, assuming ownership of renewable energy plants built by others and making PPAs like the one for Longroad's Umbriel plant.

In Arkansas, Entergy Arkansas will assume ownership of the Driver solar farm in Osceola, Arkansas, being developed by Lightsource bp (London, England). Construction on the 250-MW facility is expected to kick off later this year and be completed toward the end of 2024. It will be the largest solar facility in Arkansas. Entergy has a few of its own renewable energy projects in the planning stage. Examples include the Livonia photovoltaic project near Livonia, Louisiana, which will use panels on a single-axis tracking system to achieve a nameplate generation capacity of 150 MW. In addition to the Umbriel plant, the company's projects include the Three Corners photovoltaic plant in Clinton, Maine, which will be the state's largest solar farm. Construction kicked off last year, and upon completion, which is expected in mid-2024, the facility will provide 122.5 MW of nameplate generation capacity. Other Longroad projects include the 83-MW Foxhound solar plant near Clover, Virginia, construction of which is set to kick off soon.
