Enterprise Products Starts Up New Gasoline Additives Unit in Texas

The MTBE unit was in a turnaround mode from December of last year until late February 2005, while tie-ins were being prepared

Released Monday, April 25, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Enterprise Products Partners LP (NYSE:EPD) (Houston, Texas) has successfully completed the construction of its new Iso-Octane unit at the Mont Belvieu, Texas, plant site. First production began during the first week of April and stopped briefly to perform a short turnaround in order to clean reactor screens and complete minor troubleshooting.

The existing MTBE unit will remain in service. The new unit will be a swing production unit, allowing for the swing production of MTBE or Iso-Octane, providing Enterprise with the flexibility to produce the most attractive product based on market price and demand. The addition of this new production unit required the installation of at least seven new vessels and related utilities, while utilizing existing storage tanks. The MTBE unit was in a turnaround mode from December of last year until late February 2005, while tie-ins were being prepared for the new Iso-Octane unit.

S&B Engineers and Constructors (Houston, Texas) provided the engineering and construction services for this unit addition, as reported and followed by Industrialinfo.com, as part of its North American Projects Database, since September of 2001.

Iso-octane's use as a gasoline octane enhancement has increased significantly recently, as the industry continues to implement alternatives to the once popular use of MTBE, which has been under scrutiny for several years, due to its link to environmental health hazards.

A large percentage of MTBE producers have recently completed, or have projects underway to study the conversion of existing assets to produce alternatives to MTBE, including Iso-Octene and Iso-Octane. Progress of these projects and related investments can be tracked with Industrialinfo.com's online project tracking tool PECWeb Direct®.
