Summary

Yasunidos is suing President Daniel Noboa's government over oil operations in the ITT block, following the August 2023 referendum. The organization is seeking a halt to oil exploitation, a timeline for the removal of equipment, and the dismissal of authorities involved. The ITT block is producing 40,000 barrels per day.

Lawsuit in the Works

Yasunidos, an environmental group advocating the protection of the Yasuni reserve, has sued the government of Daniel Noboa in the constitutional court for continuing oil production in the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini fields, known as Block 43, or ITT Block, despite the 2023 referendum results.

The government has been "flagrantly disregarding the popular mandate and the ruling of the constitutional court that established a one-year deadline for the extraction activity in Block 43 to be stopped if the result (of the referendum) was favorable," said Pedro Bermeo, Yasunidos' spokesperson, to CORAPE Digital TV.

In August 2023, Ecuadorians voted to shut down the ITT block to protect the Amazon and local indigenous communities. Petroecuador, the operator, began a phased shutdown in August 2024, with plans to gradually decommission all 247 wells over five years.

Yasunidos called for the immediate end of oil extraction at the site, a timeline for the removal of equipment, and the dismissal of top government and Petroecuador officials, highlighting that the time for shutdown elapsed in August 2024.

Petroecuador's Hydrocarbons Operation

In the first nine months of this year year, Petroecuador has maintained oil production of 341,000 barrels per day (BBL/d), a 10.8% drop compared to the same period last year.

Specifically, the ITT block produced oil at a pace of 40,000 BBL/d from January to September, down from 49,000 BBL/d during the same period last year, making it the company's fourth-largest producing asset.

From January to September, Petroecuador has drilled 40 wells, though none were in the ITT block, signaling a halt to some of the asset's operations.

Petroecuador has not provided any new updates or statements about ITT Block operations on its website since September 2024, when it announced the closure of an oil well in the block.

Noboa's Position

After winning Ecuador's presidential elections, President Daniel Noboa proposed to extend oil operations at the ITT for at least one year in order to fund Ecuador's war against crime. Since his proposal, government officials have stated that the full closure process for the ITT block could span 5 years and 5 months from the start of the phased shutdown begun in August 2024.
