Expansion Permit Under Way at Bahia De Bizkaia's Regasification Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bahia de Bizkaia Gas (BBG) (Basque Counrtry, Spain), a joint ventrure formed in equal parts by Enagás (Madrid, Spain), The Basque Energy Board (EVE) (Basque Counrtry), Rreff (Berlin, Germany) and Repsol YPF SA (NYSE:REP) (Madrid, Spain), has started the permit process to expand the capacity of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Bahia de Bizkaia, Spain.

The Bahia de Bizkaia LNG terminal is in Ziérbena, Biscay province. It started commercial operations in 2003. The plant has a current storage capacity of 300,000 cubic meters. BBG officials decided to perform the expansion of the terminal capacity to respond to growing market demands.

Depending on the Spanish goverment's approval, the company will invest $85 million in the expansion of the plant by adding a third 150,000 m3 tank, which will increase its regasification capacity by 3.5 billion cubic meters per year. This expansion would be operational by the first quarter of 2015.

Due to the increasing demand of gas in Spain, other terminals are involved in expansion projects like Huelva LNG Terminal, also owned by the state-owned gas company Enagas, which recently bought BP plc's (NYSE:BP) (London, England) stake in BBG.
