Feasibility Study for 2,000-Megawatt Hongyanhe Phase II Project Passes Examination in China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The examination meeting for the feasibility study of units 5 and 6 in the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant Phase II project was held in Dalian from October 9-11. Nearly 200 experts and representatives from the Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute (Beijing), related departments of the central government, Liaoning province and the city of Dalian attended the meeting and approved the study. The Phase II Project of Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant has achieved another important step, paving a firm foundation for the final approval of the project.

During the meeting, the expert panel conducted a full, detailed and careful examination of the feasibility study prepared by China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (Shenzhen, Guangdong), a subsidiary of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (Shenzhen, Guangdong), in special teams. The expert panel concluded that construction of Hongyanhe Power Plant Phase II is one of the important measures to alleviate the shortage of primary energy in Liaoning province. It's favorable to alleviate the pressure in transportation and environmental protection, and to improve the sustainable social and economic development in Liaoning province.

Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant is in the existing plant area in Hongyanhe Town of Dalian. Two 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power units will be built in the current stage of Phase II. On May 31, 2010, the project received preliminary approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) to begin preparation for construction. On September 19, the environment impact assessment report for the site selection stage and the safety analysis evaluation report received approval from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the National Nuclear Safety Administration. On September 27, the foundation excavation for the nuclear islands of Phase II began.

Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant and the largest energy project in northeast China. So far, all four units planned in Phase I have been under construction. As of the end of September, civil works for Nnuclear Island 1 had been completed and kicked off single system testing. Civil works for Nuclear Island 2 were near complete, and erection had begun.

According to the schedule, the first unit of Phase II will begin operation by the end of 2015 and the second unit in the middle of 2016. Together with the four units in Phase I, the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant will be able to produce 45 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year.
