Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The feasibility study report for the Hequ Power Plant's 2,000-megawatt (MW) Phase III expansion, prepared by Shanxi Electric Power Design Institute (SEPDI) (Taiyuan, Shanxi), a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) (Beijing), passed the examination of an expert panel organized by China International Engineering Consultancy Corporation (Beijing) on October 11, 2013. The CEEC announced these results on October 21.

During the meeting, the expert panel discussed and reviewed various aspects of the report, including the power system connection, fuel supply, site conditions, and environmental protection. The project passed the examination of the expert panel unanimously.

The Hequ Power Plant, located at Shaban Village, Hequ County, in Xinzhou city of the Shanxi province, is one of the key power source projects planned for the northern path of the nation's program to transmit power east during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15). The power plant has a total planned capacity of 7,200 MW, including four 600-MW and four 1,000-MW, coal-fired units.

Currently, the power plant has four 600-MW, coal-fired units in operation, including two 600-MW, subcritical units commissioned in 2005, and two 660-MW, supercritical units commissioned in late 2011.

According to the report, the Phase III expansion project will be furnished with two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, air-cooling, coal-fired condensing steam turbine generating units, and flue gas desulfurization and denitration devices. The initial stage has a total investment of about $1.3 billion.

According to the schedule, construction of the project is expected to kick off in 2014, and both units will be put into operation in 2017. Upon completion, the project will meet the market demand from the end users, as well as the increasing demand from local economic development.
