Fiberight Gets Department of Ag Investment Dollars to Move Forward with Iowa Cellulosic Ethanol Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Fiberight LLC (Catonsville, Maryland) has partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for funding to move forward with converting a former corn ethanol plant in Blairstown, Iowa, to produce cellulosic ethanol.

In November of 2009, the company purchased the plant, which was operated by Sunrise Energy, followed by 78th Street Ethanol LLC, then Xenthanol, before the plant closed in 2009. Fiberight purchased the plant for $1.6 million and will now invest more than $25 million to convert the corn-based plant into a cellulosic based plant utilizing Targeted Fuel Extraction (TFE) process to cost effectively convert MSW into cellulosic biofuel.

When the plant becomes fully operational in early 2013, Fiberight will have a production capacity of 6 million gallons per year of fuel ethanol. The bulk of the conversion work is expected to begin in March or April of this year.

The conversion process has been proven at the company's pilot plant in Lawrenceville, Virginia, and is now ready for commercial-scale production.

2012 is expected to be the take-off year for cellulosic-based biofuels as companies across the globe are expected to advance the technology and receive funding to move forward. There are currently more than 30 commercial-scale projects in the works for 2012, with expected capital spending in excess of $4 billion.
