First Unit of CGNPC's Lufeng Nuclear Power Station Expects to Begin Operations in 2018

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The first unit of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation's (CGNPC) (Shenzhen, China) Lufeng Nuclear Power Station is expected to begin operations in 2018, according to an announcement from CGNPC Lufeng Nuclear Power Company Limited (Shanwei, Guangdong), a subsidiary of CGNPC and the project owner, on March 1, 2013.

The Lufeng Nuclear Power Station, located at Tianweishan, Jieshi Town in Lufeng City, is the first nuclear power station planned in the eastern Guangdong province. CGNPC kicked off a site study for the project in August 2003. The preliminary feasibility study report passed the examination of an expert panel in August 2005. The preparation of the feasibility study report, environmental impact assessment and safety evaluation reports were then completed in 2008. On December 27, 2010, CGNPC received consent from the National Development and Reform Commission to kick off the pre-stage preparations for the project.

According to plans, the project will be furnished with six gigawatt-level nuclear power units, with a total planned investment of $12 billion. Two 1,250-megawatt (MW) nuclear power units based on AP1000 passive pressurized water reactor will be built in the initial stage. Presently, the project owner is working on site preparations. Production facilities, such as the sand and aggregate preparation plant, mixing tower, and civil lab at the site have been built. In regards to project applications, the project owner has acquired 23 of the 35 documents required for the completion of the feasibility study examination.

As per schedule, Unit 1 of the project will be ready to carry out the first concrete placement in December 2013. The construction period for a single unit will be 56 months, and the interval between the commissioning of two units will be eight months; both units will be put into commercial operation in August 2018 and April 2019, respectively.
