First Unit of Kangyang Hydropower Station Put into Operation

The first unit of the Kangyang Hydropower Station on the Yellow River built by the No. 14 and No. 11 Hydro Project Bureaus of Sinohydro Corporation, the largest and the most powerful water resource and hydropower construction enterprise in China, has been put into commercial operation in Northwest China’s Qinghai province on May 18.

Kangyang Hydropower Station is the seventh power station in the cascade development scheme in the upstream of the Yellow River between Longyangxia and Liujiaxia, and also a key project in the “eleventh five-year plan” (2006-2010) of Qinghai province. The power station is located at the boundary between Jianza county and Hualong county of Qinghai province on the mainstream of the Yellow River. It’s 17 kilometers to the upstream Lijiaxia Hydropower Station and about 53 kilometers to the downstream Gongboxia Hydropower Station. The project is mainly comprised of a powerhouse, spillway, concrete gravity dam and left bank riverbed inclined clay core-wall dam. The power station is a medium-scaled power station with stay column units. Total reservoir capacity is 28.8 million cubic meters; total installation capacity is 283.5 MW and annual power output is 992 GWh. The major purpose of the power station is for power generation.

The No. 14 and No. 11 Hydro Project Bureaus of Sinohydro Corporation won the bids for the construction and operation of the concrete system (including sand and aggregate system), powerhouse civil work and metalwork installation, as well as the spillway of the project on September 22, 2003 and January 17, 2004 respectively. The first bucket of concrete for the powerhouse was placed on March 8, 2004, which was 23 days ahead of schedule; the river closure and diversion was carried out on October 20, 2005. The first unit was put into operation on May 18, 2007.
