Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $6.7 billion worth of industrial projects that are in various stages of construction in Florida. The Power Industry holds the top position for both the value and number of projects, contributing nearly $2.5 billion in projects underway.
Last year, Florida ranked second only to Texas for the amount of solar power installed for the year. While Industrial Info is tracking a handful of smaller solar projects underway in the state, the main drivers of the industry come from other fuel types. The largest power project presently underway in the state is for a natural gas-fired combined-cycle plant.
Seminole Electric Cooperative Incorporated (Tampa, Florida), which serves nearly 2 million customers across 42 Florida counties, had been considering construction of a natural gas-fired plant for more than decade when it named The Industrial Company (TIC) (Aurora, Colorado) as the lead engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the 573-megawatt (MW) plant now under construction in Shady Hills, located about 40 miles north of central Tampa. TIC broke ground for the plant in late 2023, beginning the process of installing GE Vernova (Cambridge, Massachusetts) turbines and a Vogt (Louisville, Kentucky) heat recovery steam generator. The plant is on track for completion by the end of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.
Another high-dollar Power Industry project will not only provide energy for the surrounding community, but help procure an outlet for solid waste. Pasco County, which also is home to the combined-cycle plant, is installing another municipal waste combustor at its plant in Spring Hill that will allow the facility to process an additional 475 tons of waste per day, generating 15 MW of power in process. The new unit is expected to begin operating in the summer of 2026. Subscribers can click here for more details on the project.
According to Construction Coverage, Florida ranked seventh in the nation for its new-home building rate last year, adding 16.3 units per 1,000 existing homes in 2024, placing Greater Orlando and Jacksonville in the eighth and ninth position, respectively, for the U.S. cities building the most homes. Two substantial projects underway in the state support two of the major materials used in new-home construction: gypsum wallboard and asphalt shingles. USG Corporation (Chicago, Illinois) began the expansion project for its Jacksonville gypsum wallboard plant in the summer of 2023, beginning with the demolition and removal of existing Raymond mills, calcining kettles and a baghouse. This led to the addition of two stucco production lines, a larger roller mill, new calcining kettles and conveyor systems. The improvements are expected to be completed in early 2027. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for more details on the project.
Also in Jacksonville, IKO Industries Limited (Brampton, Ontario) has launched its "Project Gator," which includes construction of a grassroot asphalt shingle plant. General contractor Dana B. Kenyon Company (Jacksonville) broke ground on the new plant late last year and expects to complete the 265,300-square-foot shingle facility in the near future. After the grassroot plant is completed, the company has lined up two potential expansions to manufacture insulation board as well as other roofing products. The two expansions possibly could be completed in 2028. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
While the Power and Industrial Manufacturing industries account for the top two positions in regard to Florida's active spending, the No. 3 position is occupied by the state's Food & Beverage Industry, which accounts for more than $1.4 billion in active spending. While a substantial portion of this activity involves cold-storage warehouses, some companies are developing facilities that will enable nationwide distribution of their products. Among these is Brazilian baked-products manufacturer Bauducco (Guarulhos, Brazil). While the company has its U.S. headquarters and a manufacturing plant in Miami, Bauducco is expanding its Florida presence northward with the construction of a plant in yet another Pasco County location, Zephyrhills, which is northeast of Tampa. Bauducco manufactures a range of popular products, including wafers, cookies and prepared toast. Phase I out of a potential three phases of construction kicked off earlier this year. The 160,000-square-foot grassroot plant is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026, when it will begin manufacturing a range of Bauducco's products.
