Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A roof over one's head is often named as one of the necessities of existence, making the manufacturers of roofing materials key players in the construction market. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.3 billion worth of active U.S. projects involving the manufacturing of the roofing products ranging in composition from typical asphalt shingles to metals and concrete products.

A couple of grassroot plants, one planned in Kansas and another already under construction in Iowa, propel the Midwest market region into the U.S.' top-spending area for roofing products projects. Last summer, Atlas Roofing Corporation (Atlanta, Georgia) broke ground on what will be a new asphalt shingle-manufacturing plant in Clinton, Iowa. The plant is being built on a 144-acre site and will be more than 400,000 square feet, which will be expandable should business conditions warrant it. The plant will manufacture all of the products offered by Atlas, including shingles, roof and wall insulation, molded products and more. The plant is expected to create more than 100 jobs when it opens next year.

One of the largest grassroot roofing products projects is set to kick off early next year in Newton, Kansas, where GAF Materials Corporation (Parsippany, New Jersey) has acquired a 230-acre site where it intends to build a 275,000-square-foot asphalt shingle-manufacturing plant. The plant is expected to begin operations in mid-2027. In Jacksonville, Florida, IKO Industries Limited (Brampton, Ontario) has launched its "Project Gator," which includes a grassroot shingle plant along with other plans for additional buildings for more roofing products. General contractor Dana B. Kenyon Company (Jacksonville) broke ground on the new plant late last year and expects to complete the 265,300-square-foot shingle-manufacturing plant next summer. But IKO has further plans. Upon completion of the shingles plant, IKO intends to begin work on a 306,000-square-foot plant to manufacture insulation board products. As that project draws to an end, IKO intends to begin work on another plant for rolled and underlaying roofing products. All three projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2027. While asphalt shingles remain the prevailing material used for residential rooftops, some other companies are gearing up to manufacture different roofing materials. Central States Manufacturing Incorporated manufactures not only metal roofing, but also metal siding used in residential, commercial, agricultural and recreational buildings. The company is underway with construction of a grassroot manufacturing plant in Tooele, Utah, about 30 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The company is constructing a 115,000-square-foot facility to manufacture its products that is expected to begin operations in the second half of next year. Westlake Royal Roofing Solutions specializes in long-life roof systems, including concrete roofing, which is what is front and center as the company expands its concrete roofing products plant in Okeechobee, Florida. Westlake manufactures a range of concrete roofing products from traditional Spanish barrel tile to low-profile slate tiles. The company began work at its operational Okeechobee plant earlier this year by constructing two new buildings (30,000 and 6,900 square feet), the larger of which will house a new production line. When completed, which is expected in the near future, the plant's production output will be lifted from 320 tiles per minute to 430 tiles per minute.
