FPL Energy Set to Begin Full Commercial Operation of 750 Megawatt Cogen Project in Marcus Hook

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). FPL Energy Marcus Hook LLC, subsidiary of FPL Group Incorporated (NYSE: FPL) (North Palm Beach, Florida), has completed construction and is in start up testing for the $300 million Marcus Hook Cogeneration project located in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania in Delaware County. (Plant 1049477, PEC 12002313)

Construction for the project began in January 2002 and was completed late September 2003. FPL is anticipating full commercial operation June 2004. The plant consists of three natural gas fired 172 megawatt (MW) GE Power Systems MS7001FA PG7241 (FA) combustion turbine generators each attached to a Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The steam generated by the HRSG's will be used to drive a single 233MW Toshiba International Corporation steam turbine generator. The cogen will operate in a unique 3-on-1 combined-cycle configuration with the steam turbine operating in a condensing-reheat extraction method to generate steam for the existing Marcus Hook Refinery.

Southern Jersey Industries, (NYSE: SJI) (Folsom, New Jersey), the energy holding company for South Jersey Gas, South Jersey Energy and South Jersey Resources Group, will supply the natural gas for the new plant after entering into a five year fuel management service agreement with FPL Energy. Marcus Hook will be connected to the Grid via PECO Energy's two existing 230Kv lines (220-39 and 220-43) located approximately 2.2 miles from the Chichester substation.

The Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE: SGR) headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and its subsidiary Stone & Webster performed both the engineering and the construction duties for the project.
