Released March 31, 2025 | SUGAR LAND

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV) (Cambridge, Massachusetts) announced that it has completed more than half of the turbines ordered for the 3.5-gigawatt (GW) SunZia windfarm in New Mexico, which its developer claims will be the largest onshore windfarm in the western hemisphere when completed.

Although plans for the large SunZia windfarm have been in place since last decade, the size of the development, along with permitting for the transmission infrastructure required for such a large amount of power, took some time to reach fruition. The developer, Pattern Energy (San Francisco, California), closed financing for the project in December 2023, and around that time, Pattern placed the order with GE Vernova for turbines with a total capacity of 2.4 GW.

The order called for 674 units of the 3.6-154 wind turbine, which has a 3.6-megawatt (MW) generating capacity, along with long-term services. The remaining 2.1 GW of turbines will be supplied by Danish manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus). GE Vernova late last week announced that it has manufactured more than half of the 674 turbines called for in the order.

The turbines were built at GE Vernova's plant in Pensacola, Florida. The company has been investing in modernizing the plant to better develop wind turbines. Late last year, it started a small modernization project, geared toward turbine nacelles, that is expected to be completed this summer. Speaking at ribbon-cutting ceremony held for a new customer-experience center at the plant, GE Vernova Chief Executive Officer Scott Strazik spoke of the recent investments the company has made in the plant to enhance wind turbine production: "The roughly $70 million we've invested in Pensacola since 2023 is enabling us to help meet America's and the world's accelerating energy demand. Such strategic investments, and the jobs they create in the U.S., aim to both help our customers meet the doubling of demand and accelerate American innovation and technology development, to boost the country's energy security and global competitiveness."

GE Vernova recently secured two orders from German energy company RWE AG (Essen) for 109 wind turbines spanning two Texas projects. Forty-five 2.82-MW turbines will repower RWE's Forest Creek windfarm in West Texas, while 69 of the 2.82-MW turbines will go to the grassroot Honey Mesquite facility in Glasscock County, also in West Texas. The repower is expected to be completed this year, and the grassroot windfarm is expected to be completed in 2026. GE Vernova's Pensacola plant has produced 500 repower turbines since 2024, according to the company.

Vestas' share of the turbines for the SunZia project are being manufactured at two factories in Colorado. The company will supply 242 of its V 163-4.5 turbines, which have a generating capacity of 4.5 MW, with delivery expected to begin in the first quarter of this year. The nacelles are being manufactured in Brighton, on the northeastern outskirts of Denver, while the blades are being manufactured at the company's factory in Windsor, north of Denver. The SunZia windfarm is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026. At the time of the orders, both GE Vernova and Vestas said that the SunZia order was the largest single order for onshore wind turbines in either company's history. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
