Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--GNL Mejillones (GNLM), the joint venture between GEF Suez SA (EPA:GSZ) subsidiary Suez Energy International (Paris, France) and Chilean copper giant Codelco (Santiago), has announced plans for a second phase of a gas terminal project being constructed in the north of Chile.
The first phase consists of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) reception and regasification terminal that will have the capacity to send out 5.5 million cubic meters of gas per day, enough to produce 1,100 megawatts of electricity. The second stage of the project consists of the construction of a new land-based storage and regasification terminal that will eventually replace the floating unit that is scheduled to operate at the pier for three years. Both the floating and land-based terminals will have a capacity to hold 160,000 cubic meters of LNG. At the moment, the project is under economic evaluation, and a final decision will be reached by the company after analyzing the LNG demand in the first stage. Currently, construction of Phase II of the project is scheduled to begin in January 2012 with a completion time of approximately three years.
