Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Company (Xinjiang, China), through Australian subsidiary Gold Wind Australia Pty Limited (Sydney, New South Wales), has begun work on the 167.5-megawatt (MW) Gullen Range Windfarm in New South Wales (NSW). It is expected to power 63,000 households in the region. The power plant is located approximately 20 kilometers (km) west of Goulburn, and is the second power project for Gold Wind in Australia.
Goldwind is the world's second-largest turbine manufacturer, with a global market share of nearly 10%. The company said that government support for renewable energy was the primary reason for it to enter the Australian market.
Goldwind's Gullen Range Windfarm will be built with a capacity of 167.5 MW, hosting the first "next generation" 2.5-MW, gearless, Permanent Magnet Direct Drive (PMDD) wind turbines in Australia, manufactured by Goldwind. The project was initially proposed by Epuron Pty Limited (North Sydney), which secured planning approvals from the NSW government in 2010. Epuron entered into an agreement with Gold Wind in 2011 for supply of the wind turbine generators; in 2011, full ownership of the project was transferred to Goldwind Australia. The project reached financial closure in 2013 and is under construction. The first power from the windfarm will be produced by August 2014.
The windfarm is being built by a balance-of-plant consortium of civil and electrical contractors, Civil and Allied Technical Construction Pty Limited (CatCon) (Adelaide, South Australia), in association with Consolidated Power Projects (CPP) (Adelaide).
Goldwind owns and operates a 20-MW Morton Lane windfarm, which is located in Caramut, Victoria. The Morton Lane windfarm project was proposed by NewEn Australia (Tooma, New South Wales) in 2007 and was taken over by Gold Wind Australia in 2009; it became the company's first energy project in Australia.
Energy Australia (Melbourne, Victoria) signed a power purchase agreement with Goldwind to buy the electricity and renewable energy credits from the Gullen Range windfarm, while Transgrid (Sydney) has been approved to connect the windfarm to the nearby local grid.
