Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Google (Mountain View, California) is sticking by its goal to achieve net-zero emissions from its operations by 2030. Last week, the company announced that it had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with utility Salt River Project (Tempe, Arizona) for power from three renewable energy projects in Arizona that are operated by NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida).

The PPA is for 480 megawatts (MW) of power from three facilities that encompass solar power, wind power and battery storage: the Sonoran Solar Energy Center, the Storey Energy Center and the Babbitt Ranch Energy Center. One facility is complete, the other is nearing the finish line, and the Babbitt Ranch facility is under construction.

Sonoran Solar Energy Center
NextEra just wrapped up work on the Sonoran Energy Center near Buckeye, Arizona, late last year. Buckeye is immediately west of Greater Phoenix. The 250-MW solar facility features more than 1 million solar panels. An accompanying battery energy storage system (BESS) uses lithium-ion technology to provide up to 250 MW of power when the sun isn't shining and is one of the state's largest operational BESS units. Storey Energy Center
NextEra's Storey Energy Center in Coolidge, about 50 miles southeast of Phoenix, is in the process of wrapping up construction. Like the Sonoran Energy Center, Storey contains both solar and BESS units. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Fargo, North Dakota) is wrapping up the placement of more than 300,000 solar panels manufactured by First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona), which will generate about 88 MW. In addition, another 88 MW of power will be available outside of daylight hours in the form of an 88-MW BESS unit that uses Tesla Incorporated's (NASDAQ:TSLA) (Austin, Texas) Megapack battery technology. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the solar and BESS portions of the project.

Babbitt Ranch Energy Center
Unlike the other two facilities involved in the PPA, the Babbitt Ranch facility is a wind power facility, under construction in Coconino County, north of Flagstaff. Toward the middle of last year, EPC firm Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) began placing the first of 53 turbines. Rated at 3 MW each, the windfarm will provide aggregate power of about 160 MW when completed by the end of this year. But more could be in store for the facility. Plans call for the incorporation of a new 60-MW solar portion into the energy center's design. Construction on this could begin as soon as this year, resulting in the new generation by the end of 2025.

And that still may not be all that's in store for Babbitt Ranch. NextEra has drawn up tentative plans for a BESS unit to be constructed at the facility, probably rated at 60 MW. However, the project has been deemed as having a low probability (0-69%) of moving forward as planned, which calls for a 2027 start date to begin constructing the BESS. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the wind, solar and battery portions of the project.

Mesa Data Center
Google's data center, under construction in Mesa on Phoenix's southeastern outskirts, has three planned phases of construction, the first of which is underway and planned to be completed in 2025. This phase of construction will bring the addition of a 288,500-square-foot data center building with two server halls and an accompanying utility switchyard. Planned second and third phases of building would essentially double then triple the facility's size with construction projects similar to Phase I. The second phase of construction could begin in early 2026, followed by the start of Phase III two years later. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the related project reports.

Future Arizona Renewable Projects
There could be room for future PPAs between SRP and Google for future NextEra projects in Arizona, where the company has at least two other projects tentatively planned. NextEra's plans for the Belmont Energy Center call for 450 MW of both solar generation and battery storage from a site in Maricopa County, west of Phoenix, that could potentially begin construction in the summer of 2025. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.

Another large NextEra solar-plus-BESS facility is taking shape in Pinal County, southeast of Phoenix. Plans call for various phases of construction, including three phases for solar development that would add up to 350 MW of generation along with a 350-MW BESS unit. As envisioned, the entire operation could be completed by 2027, but as with the Belmont project, IIR has given each phase of this project a low probability of moving forward as planned.
