As the region's coal-fired plants close, natural gas-fired projects dominate the states' planned spending. Capital natural gas-fired projects account for more than $3.8 billion of the region's planned spending. Among these EmberClear Corporation's (Houston, Texas) planned 1,050-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle plant in Cadiz, Ohio. Construction is set to begin this summer, with Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). The facility will take about three years to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

About 200 miles away in Oregon, Ohio, near Lake Erie, CME Energy LLC (Boston, Massachusetts) is gearing up to begin construction on its combined cycle Oregon Clean Energy Center. The facility is being built at the site of an existing power station and will have a generating capacity of 955 MW. The plant will use Siemens equipment. The $860 million project is planned to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2021. Black & Veatch Incorporated is providing EPC. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Renewable energy projects also are prevalent in the region. Among these projects is Invenergy LLC's Badger Hollow solar power facility in Wisconsin. For more information on the project, see Industrial Info's project report and May 24, 2019, article - More Than $25.9 Billion in U.S. Solar Power Projects Set to Begin Construction in 2019.

Among the largest wind projects set to kick in the third quarter is Apex Clean Energy Incorporated's (Charlottesville, Virginia) 400-MW Isabella Windfarm near Weidman, Michigan. The facility will include 175 2.3-MW wind turbine generators. Construction is planned to be completed before the end of 2020. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $640 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Newman, Illinois, EDP Renewables North America LLC (Houston, Texas) will begin construction on a 202-MW windfarm this summer. The Harvest Ridge Windfarm will use a mix of 101 Vestas 3.45-MW and 4.2-MW wind turbine generators. The project also includes a collector substation. The Boldt Company (Appleton, Wisconsin) is the general contractor on the project, which has an overall TIV of $420 million. The project is planned for completion in the first quarter of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the windfarm and substation.

Such projects are helping replace the area's retiring coal-fired plants. Among the dismantlement and demolition projects planned to kick off in the quarter is that of the Walter C. Beckjord coal-fired power station in New Richmond, Ohio, 22 miles east of Cincinnati. The plant was decommissioned in 2014. EPC contactor MCM Management Corporation (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan) plans to complete the project in the summer of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Industrial Info also is tracking more than 20 Power Industry maintenance projects planned to kick off in the region in the third quarter, although typically late in the quarter to avoid the height of the summer cooling season. Among these is Duke Energy Corporation's (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) planned maintenance to units 7 and 8 at the Vermillion Generating Station in Cayuga, Indiana. Maintenance on the two natural gas-fired units will last about 20 days each and will include major turbine inspections and repairs to the General Electric (NYSE:GE) simple-cycle units, which each have a generating capacity of 80 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
