Great River Energy Completes Construction of $69 Million Expansion Project at the Cambridge Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Great River Energy (GRE) (Elk River, Minnesota) has completed construction and start-up testing for the $69 Million 170-megawatt expansion project at the Cambridge Power Station located in Cambridge, Minnesota.

Construction for the project started in March 2006 and was completed earlier this year. GRE anticipates full commercial start-up in May. The project consisted of installing a 170-megawatt natural gas-fired Siemens PG SGT6-4000F (V84.3A) to the existing facility that will operate in a simple cycle peaking configuration. It may also occasionally be called on to operate to support voltage on the area’s transmission grid and other grid support functions. The Cambridge Power Station currently has a generating capacity of 29-megawatts (via a GE Power Systems MS5001 CT) and the installation of the new unit will boost the plants nameplate capacity to a total of almost 200-megawatts.

In conjunction with the addition of the new unit at the plant, area transmission lines will be rebuilt and upgraded to modern standards. This project consisted of improving up to 47 miles of existing 69-Kv transmission lines in the area.

Great River Energy acted as their own general contractor for the project and subcontracted the majority of the work associated with the expansion project.
