Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The controversial biomass energy project planned by Green Energy Partners DeKalb LLC (Marietta, Georgia) will be the subject of a public meeting on December 18, in which the company will discuss its permit application to construct a waste-to-energy plant in DeKalb County, Georgia, with the public.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division will hold a public meeting and hearing on December 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lou Walker Senior Center about a draft permit it has prepared for a proposed (and opposed) gasification project that Green Energy Partners wants to construct in unincorporated Lithonia.
The mayor of Lithonia recently sent out an e-mail to citizens saying, "We need a massive presence at the meeting to demonstrate our opposition to and concern about this project."
The buzz kill for biomass-to-energy projects' "incinerators" has once again raised concerns of citizens who fear health and environmental problems. Project developers are hoping the discussion will lead to positive reaction so the company can move forward with construction early next year. The DeKalb county commission already has green-lighted the energy project.
The $60 million plant will process some 240 tons per day of waste material, and gasify it into synthetic gas to feed a boiler that will drive a 10-megawatt steam turbine to create green energy. The company has already lined up engineering and construction firms and technology providers who are eager to move forward with the project.
If all goes as planned, Green Energy Partners will begin construction of the 80,000-square-foot facility in March or April of next year, and supply energy to the local grid by late 2014.
