Honeywell Invests in Major Process Controls and Environmental Upgrades at its Midwest Chemical Plant

Honeywell International Incorporated (NYSE: HON) (Morristown, New Jersey) recently completed a major process controls upgrade and replacement in the fluorine chemicals production area of its Metropolis Works chemical plant located in Metropolis, Illinois. This unit was previously operating with very old process controls and pneumatic systems and was replaced with Honeywell's own Experion PKS system. The upgrade was completed during the second quarter 2004.

Planning and scheduling are already underway for another major process control upgrade that will include the installation of Experion PKS in the remaining production areas of the plant including the uranium hexafluoride (UF6) unit. Construction is expected to begin early next year and be complete in the fall of 2005.

Other significant investments at the site planned for 2005 include an expansion of the wastewater treatment unit to include a new clarifier, neutralizing system and settling tanks to remove solids from an estimated 350 gpm of wastewater before it is released back to the Ohio River. Chemtex International Incorporated (Wilmington, North Carolina) has been selected to provide engineering assistance for the upgrade that is expected to be underway in the first quarter of next year. These two projects combined represent an estimated Total Investment Value (TIV) of $10 million dollars.
