Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China Huadian Corporation (Beijing) recently announced that Phase I of the Huadian Jurong Power Plant is ready for full operation. The announcement followed the completion of the 168-hour, continuous, full-load trial operation for Unit 1 in August 2013. On September 23, Unit 2 of Jiangsu Huadian Jurong Power Generation Company Limited's (Jurong, Jiangsu) 2,000-megawatt (MW), coal-fired Jurong Power Plant Phase I project was connected to the grid and loaded to 1,000 MW for trial operation.

The Huadian Jurong Power Plant, located in Xiashu Town of Jurong, a county-level city under Zhenjiang City, in eastern China's Jiangsu province, has a total planned capacity of 4,000 MW. This includes two 1,000-MW, Chinese-made, ultra-supercritical coal-fired units and flue gas desulfurization and denitration devices. The goal is to replace small coal-fired units with larger ones, backed by a total investment of about $1.3 billion for Phase I.

The project is jointly invested by China Huadian Corporation (Beijing) (51%), Jiangsu Electric Power Development Company Limited (Nanjing, Jiangsu) (29%), Jiangshu Huadian Qishuyan Power Generation Company Limited (Changzhou, Jiangsu) (10%), Shanghai Huadian Electric Power Development Company Limited (Shanghai) (5%) and Jiangsu Huadian Yangzhou Power Generation Company Limited (Yangzhou, Jiangsu) (5%). In July 2011, Phase I of the project received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). Construction of the project began in late 2011.

The project received approval in the first round from the NDRC to solve the power shortage problems in China. The project is connected to the East China Power Grid (ECPG) via 500-kilovolt transmission lines. Full operation of the project will play an important role in optimizing the power source structure, improving the energy efficiency, and in alleviating the power shortage in southern Jiangsu, as well as the entire ECPG.
