Iberdrola Plans to Expand Penascal Windfarm in Southern Texas to 606 Megawatts

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Iberdrola Renewables has decided to add an additional 202 megawatts (MW) to the Penascal Windfarm in Kenedy County, Texas. The windfarm currently consists of 168 Mitsubishi MHI-92 wind turbines, each of which is able to produce 2.4 MW of renewable energy for the local grid. The Phase III addition to the Penascal Windfarm will be called the Baffin Windfarm; it will add 101 Gamesa G97 Wind Turbines of 2 MW each.

When Phase III is completed, the Penascal Windfarm will have a nameplate capacity of 606 MW. Since the windfarm is close to the Gulf Coast shoreline in southern Texas, it will have ample wind opportunities.

One of the facility's major features is its Avian Radar Protection System, which tracks flocks of migratory birds that fly into the path of the wind turbines. The system shuts down the turbines until the birds are out of harm's way.

The Penascal Windfarm began commercial operations in 2010, after being developed in two phases. Iberdrola Renewables is a subsidiary of Grupo Iberdrola S.A. (MCE:IBE) (Bilbao, Spain).
